Barely five months after an accident involving his motorcade resulted in 2 of his bodyguards getting injured, another accident occurred on Sunday morning, involving Deputy President David Mabuza‘s convoy resulted in the death of one of Mabuza’s bodyguards, News24 reports.
At the time of the accident, the motorcade was taking Mabuza from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Mpumalanga, where he was scheduled to arrive.
According to the spokesperson for the police department, Colonel Mathe, one of the back-up cars had a tyre blow out, which led to the vehicle flipping over.
“Three passengers in the car sustained life-threatening injuries,” the report said. “At the scene, they determined that one of these individuals was no longer alive, and they transported the other two to a hospital close by so that they could receive emergency medical care,” said Mathe.
She went on to say that the families of the victims were being notified by the SAPS employee health and wellness unit.
Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola extended his condolences to the member’s family, friends, and colleagues, and he wished the afflicted members a speedy recovery. The member who passed away was a member of the National Police.
At the police station in Middelburg, they have opened an investigation into a case of culpable homicide.
Mabuza was not hurt, and his vehicle was unharmed in the incident.
On the first of June, a collision occurred on the N1 in Midrand involving President Mabuza’s motorcade. At that moment, he was not present in any of the vehicles.
2 of his bodyguards were hurt, but they were only minorly hurt, so they were taken to the hospital.
