The family of Zolani Toyana, who was 23 years old and had been brutally butchered and killed in Khayelitsha over the last weekend, were dismayed to learn that the 17-year-old suspect, who happens to be a girl, had been granted bail for only R1k.
According to Scrolla the suspect, a teenage girl aged 17, was taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the allegations that she stabbed the victim with a shattered bottle.
The previous weekend, Toyana is said to have met a group of five teenage girls at a tavern, as stated by his family. He had asked one of them if they would accompany him when he went home.
As the girl’s sister stepped in and said she couldn’t go with him, the confrontation between the two of them began.
On Tuesday, February 20, the suspect appeared in the Khayelitsha court, where he was granted bail for a nominal amount of R1,000.
The matter will be further looked into on April 19th, 2023, when it will be continued to be investigated. Zukiswa Toyana, Zolani’s mother, voiced her dissatisfaction by noting that the one who was responsible for her son’s death was being allowed to go free.
“She put my son to death like a dog, but all she has to do is pay a measly R1,000; will that bring my son back to me?” She questioned while choking back emotions.
Toyana has expressed her desire that the slaying of her son will not be relegated to the status of a mere statistic and that the offender will spend their life behind bars.
