The dead bodies of 27 people have been found “dumped” by the side of the road in the Ngwerere area, which is located north of the capital city of Lusaka in Zambia. It is believed that the deceased were migrants from Ethiopia, Business Live reports.

According to the Police Spokesperson Danny Mwale, who spoke to the BBC, it is likely that they died of asphyxiation while being transported.

According to him, one of the survivors who was found was “gasping for air,” and they rushed him to a nearby hospital.

The majority of migrants on their way to South Africa come from the Horn of Africa, and Zambia serves as a transit point for them.

Who dumped them by the side of the road?

According to Mr. Mwale, residents of Ngwerere discovered the bodies on Sunday morning at 06:00 (local time) (04:00 GMT).

He stated that based on the identity documents that were discovered on the migrants, the police believe that they are Ethiopian nationals.

The issue of economic migrants

South Africa has been a popular destination for economic migrants from various countries within Africa and beyond. People migrate to South Africa in search of better economic opportunities, including employment, entrepreneurship, and access to education and healthcare. The country has the largest and most developed economy in Africa, attracting migrants from neighboring countries as well as those further away.

Factors contributing to South Africa’s appeal as a destination for economic migrants include its relatively stable political environment, well-established infrastructure, diverse industries, and a comparatively higher standard of living compared to some other African countries. Additionally, South Africa has a relatively more developed financial system and access to international markets, which can be attractive to investors and entrepreneurs.

The majority of economic migrants to South Africa come from neighboring countries such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, and Swaziland, among others. They often seek job opportunities in sectors such as mining, agriculture, construction, domestic work, and informal trade. These migrants may face challenges such as language barriers, discrimination, and difficulties in accessing social services.

It’s important to note that South Africa also experiences some tensions and social challenges related to migration. The influx of economic migrants can put pressure on local resources and job markets, leading to competition and occasionally fueling social and economic tensions. As a result, immigration policies and public sentiment toward migrants can vary over time, influenced by economic conditions and political factors.

The South African government has implemented various immigration policies and measures to manage migration flows. These policies aim to balance economic opportunities with the need to protect domestic job markets and social services. They include work permit systems, visa regulations, and measures to address irregular migration.

It’s crucial to recognize that discussing migration and its impacts can be a complex and sensitive topic. People’s motivations for migrating are diverse, and individual experiences can vary significantly. It’s important to approach the subject with empathy, respect, and an understanding of the broader social, economic, and political context in which migration occurs.
