Before the 55th elective conference in December, former home affairs and public enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba is reported to be the recent ANC member to run for secretary-general (SG).
According to Times Live the former minister said the secretary-general should have “the ear of the party president” and a good relationship with him.
The ANC needs a reliable SG first and foremost. The movement’s weaknesses in the the last five years include the SG’s half-term. “The SG was on leave for the remainder of the term, which caused head office a problem,” said Gigaba.
26 years in the national executive committee. That shows the movement. I served four presidents and four secretary-generals. That showed me how the company works. “Previous secretary-generals can teach us,” he said.
Gigaba joins ANC general manager Fébé Potgieter, transport minister Fikile Mbalula, water and sanitation minister Senzo Mchunu, and former Gauteng health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa on the shortlist.
Based on allegations by his estranged wife Nomachule Mngoma, the rectified state capture inquiry report suggested that agencies of law enforcement investigate Gigaba for corruption on Thursday.
Last year, Mngoma testified against Gigaba. Gigaba denied the claims at the inquiry.
In the rectified report, the commission advised law enforcement to investigate Gigaba’s 2013 visits to the Gupta residence for cash payments and possible corruption charges.
Also it recommended an investigation to establish whether the Guptas gave him money to pay for his wedding and whether they paid for his 2014 or 2015 trip to Dubai with his wife.
After the second report was released, Gigaba said inquiry chair Raymond Zondo wanted to “kill” him politically. Gigaba tweeted that Zondo had found no corruption evidence after three years and R1bn.
“Rather than trying to clear me, he asks for more investigations to kill me politically. “If both he and his puppet masters knew,” said Gigaba.
