Eight young women were gang raped near an abandoned mine on the West Rand, shocking the country.
Some victims were reportedly raped by three men.
Police have cracked down on illegal mining in Krugersdorp and other areas because the gang rape suspects are believed to be zama zamas.
One victim described the men who approached them as “evil” and wore balaclavas and mining overalls.
The incident prompted Police Minister Bheki Cele to act against the perpetrators, which led police to another major problem: illegal mining of abandoned mines.
The latest sting operation led police to Stilfontein in the North West, where they found 15 AK47s, six hunting rifles, two shotguns, one R5 assault rifle, 6,000 rounds of ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
