Gresham Mandy, a representative of the community policing forum, revealed that reports of Sheba’s activities surfaced from the Arboretum Farm at Walkers Fruit Farms around 1 am on Wednesday. This heart-wrenching story began last week when Sheba managed to escape from her enclosure on a plot in Johannesburg’s south. Her owner reported that the fence had been deliberately cut, suggesting foul play and prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her escape.
A Terrifying Journey Unfolds
Following her escape, Sheba embarked on a treacherous journey that would have dire consequences for the Walkerville neighbourhood. Under the cover of darkness, she skillfully navigated the hills, ultimately finding herself on the west side of the Walkers Fruit Farms. This shift in location placed her dangerously close to livestock and brought her within striking distance of other residents, creating a volatile and tense situation. Gresham Mandy confirmed that Sheba’s movements during the night had led her into a more densely populated area, heightening concerns for the safety of the community.

A Tragic End to Sheba’s Reign
In the early hours of the morning, tragedy struck when Sheba entered another farm approximately three kilometres away from her original sighting. It was there that she launched a vicious attack, claiming the life of a farmer’s dog. The severity of this incident left the tiger’s owner with no choice but to take immediate and decisive action. Sheba was shot and killed, ending her reign of terror and putting an end to the imminent threat she posed to both humans and animals in the area.
Escaping into Uncertainty

The owner, still grappling with the aftermath of the horrific events, expressed a belief that the fence cutting was a deliberate act driven by ill intentions. A Path of Destruction

Fleeing from her enclosure, she unleashed her aggression on unsuspecting victims. A 39-year-old man was among those unfortunate enough to cross her path, suffering injuries that will require a period of recovery.
Sheba had moved across the hills to the west side of the fruit farm during the night, bringing her closer to livestock and other residents in a more densely populated area, according to Mandy.
Additionally, a pig and two dogs fell victim to Sheba’s ferocity. Tragically, due to the severity of their injuries, both dogs had to be euthanized, highlighting the irrevocable toll Sheba’s rampage exacted on innocent lives.
A Lost Opportunity for an Animal Sanctuary
If captured alive, plans were in place to transfer Sheba to a well-maintained big cat sanctuary in Midvaal, as revealed by Gresham Mandy. This animal sanctuary currently houses Sheba’s male partner, who had been relocated there for his safety. The intention was to provide Sheba with a controlled environment, away from human contact, where she could live out the rest of her days. However, the tragic events that unfolded denied her the chance for redemption and dashed hopes of finding sanctuary and solace in captivity.
